Think of it: Making pizza with ingredients so fresh, they taste homegrown. That's because they are! Kids love pizza, so why not get them involved creating a garden full of pizza vegetables, herbs, and spices? Grow them in containers or in a section of the yard. Either way, your kids will love to participate, and your pizza will taste extra special.
Bring in the kid committee and decide which vegetables, herbs, and spices to grow. Tomatoes, peppers, oregano, and basil come to mind. Next, decide on containers or a garden bed.
You want rich, crumbly soil without clumps for your garden. Remove any stones or debris from the soil, then add Miracle-Gro® Garden Soil for Flowers and Vegetables or Miracle-Gro® Organic Choice® Garden Soil. Add about 4" of Miracle-Gro soil on top of your existing soil, and work it in with a rake, hoe, or tiller.
Put in your plants according to the instructions on the seed packets or plant containers, and be sure to give them some space.
To help your young plants grow vigorously, give them plenty of water and plant food. You can do both at once with a Miracle-Gro® LiquaFeed® Ready-to-Use Plant Feeder. Another option is using Miracle-Gro® Organic Choice All-Purpose Organic Plant Food, followed by a healthy dose of water.
Protect your plants by putting down a layer of mulch. It will keep weeds from cropping up and will help your garden retain moisture. A two-inch layer should do the trick.
The moment you've been waiting for. Pick vegetables as they ripen for your pizza toppings and herbs and spices to add some zing. Try making pizza sauce with your own tomatoes.
For best results, remember to water and feed regularly, making sure to water at the root
After plants have matured, apply a pre-emergent weed preventer throughout your garden bed.
